The horse bus was Sydney’s first mode of public transport between the 1860s and 1890s during the Gold Rush (Riley, 2011). It seated up to 11 passengers on the inside and an additional 13 passengers on the roof, which was accessible by a ladder or stairway. This greatly improved the quality of life for city workers. For the first time, they did not have to live within walking distance to work and could “enjoy their leisure time further afield” (Powerhouse Teacher Notes, 2013, p.4).
