Our first image on our timeline was the Tricycles. It first appeared between 1850 and 1870. This specific tricycle from the powerhouse museum was made by Richardson Ellson & Co. of Coventry, England, in about 1884 and is known as the 'Rob Roy'.These stable machines were popular with doctors, clergymen, and proved an ideal delivery vehicle. At this specific historical time tricycles enabled women to become mobile without sacrificing their fashion. The tricycle was responsible for a number of technological developments including (open) differential gearing, later used in automobile design, as well as the chain and sprocket drive mechanism, fundamental to the later design and success of the safety bicycle.
